To open the snipping tool on a Mac, simultaneously press Shift, Command, and 4. A crosshair will appear on the screen as a result. Drag a portion of the screen to choose it.

 

It will grow darker where the screen was taken. You can move the darkened area by dragging it while holding down the Space bar and using the snipping tool. You can choose to have your cursor shown in Mac screenshots.

 

Furthermore, with the snipping tool, you may even record an entire window. If you simultaneously press Shift, Command, 4 and Space, the cursor will turn into a camera icon.
